Willow’s performance on this benchmark is astonishing: It performed a computation in under five minutes that would take one of today’s fastest supercomputers 1025 or 10 septillion years. If you want to write it out, it’s 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years. This mind-boggling number exceeds known timescales in physics and vastly exceeds the age of the universe. It lends credence to the notion that quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes, in line with the idea that we live in a multiverse, a prediction first made by David Deutsch.
現在のスーパー・コンピュータが 10^25 年かかる計算を５分で終えるという劇的な性能を誇るという量子コンピューティングのチップが発表された。もちろん、量子コンピュータというのは用途が限定されていて、何を計算させた結果なのかは知らないが、これまでも逆に単純な足し算だと小学生の暗算にすら勝てないと言われてきた。パフォーマンスについては慎重に評価しないといけないのだが、ひとまず進展しているという事実には興味をもって良いのだろう。
実は、僕はあまり熱心に勉強してないんだよね。既にオライリーの『動かして学ぶ 量子コンピュータ プログラミング』という本は買ってあるけれど、ビニールすら解いていない（技術書の「ビニ本」というのは珍しいが、ヨドバシカメラなどでは本をビニールに包むどころか専用の磁気タグまでつけている）。
