Japan ranks as the most complex country in the Economic Complexity Index (ECI) ranking. Compared to a decade prior, Japan's position in the ECI ranking has remained unchanged. Japan's stagnant complexity has occurred alongside the falling diversification of its exports. Moving forward, Japan is positioned to take advantage of few opportunities to diversify its production using its existing knowhow.
経済的な指標というものは取り方によって色々なことが言えてしまうので、実際に経済指標がいかに市場や政策を誘導するようなインチキでありえるかという本まで出版されているほどだ。それにしても、ハーヴァード大学の複雑系経済学のラボでは、日本が最も高い ECI（経済複雑性指標）のスコアをもつと分析している。これはつまり国の産業構造が洗練されていて多様性をもつということなので、このスコアが高いことは単純に良いか悪いかは言えないにしても、色々な可能性があるという点では喜ばしいことだと言える（産業構造が複雑で洗練されているということは、裏を返すと参入障壁が高いとか企業や官公庁にフレキシビリティがないという意味にもなる）。
